Surrendering an Animal
SURRENDER/ANIMAL INTAKE POLICY
THE HUMANE SOCIETY IS FULL AT THIS TIME AND THE LISTS WE DO HAVE ARE QUITE EXTENSIVE.
AT THIS TIME, WE ARE NO LONGER PUTTING ANIMALS ON THE INTAKE LISTS.
The Humane Society of Highlands County accepts unwanted pets and stray animals on a space-availability basis. This means that we need to have the kennel space to intake the animal. If there is no space available, there is a waiting list that the person can place the animal on; however, we have no guarantee of a time frame for a call to come in. So, please be patient with us.
If we intake your animal, please have any available veterinary records available on the animal to give us. Also, please provide us with any information you have regarding the animal. For example, is the animal housebroken? Outside or indoor pet? Good with children, dogs, cats? Does it play, jump, chew, dig, etc? Any type of information that we can pass on to the new owner would be great.
We do ask for a surrender donation of $50.00 for the intake of your animal. This donation will help to off-set the cost of any medical procedure, medications and/or vaccinations that the animal may need during their stay with us.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the shelter to ask. It is recommended that you call the shelter before bringing an animal out to us in case you need to be put our waiting list.
