PRESS RELEASE

August 27, 2010

The entire staffs of the Humane Society, along with its Board Members, are very pleased to
announce the opening of our Low-Cost Spay / Neuter Clinic on September 13, 2010.

All information regarding setting up appointments, costs, and services can be found on our web
site humanesocietyhc.com, under the Pet Resources tab: Spay and Neuter Assistance.  We will be doing surgeries every Monday and appointments are necessary, no walk-in will be accepted.

This decision has been on our radar screen for over 3 years and we have finally been able to
make all the necessary preparations to offer this service to the community. Dr. Elton J.
Gissendanner will be doing the surgery. For those of you who don’t know, Dr. “G” as he is
affectionately called, is currently doing all the surgeries on the dogs and cats we adopt out.

The Humane Society is requesting that you continue to support our efforts with donations. This
clinic will provide the shelter with minimal financial support. Our purpose is to provide low cost
spay and neutering to the community to help decrease the numbers of unwanted puppies and
kittens born each year.

The entire staff of the Humane Society, along with its Board Members and very dedicated volunteers wants to extend a very sincere THANK YOU to the members of Highlands County who heard our cry for help and immediately responded.  The donations came flooding in, the support was much appreciated and we are very optimistic that the Humane Society’s future is looking good.

We ask everyone to please give when you can, think of us and the hundreds of animals we help each and every day and remember we are YOUR shelter.  We exists 100% on your donations so come on Highlands County, let’s all get together and find a way to help these animals find forever homes.

In order to help cut costs, our hours of operation will be Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11am – 4pm starting July 5, 2010.  We will be closed to the public on the other days. Please come to the shelter during operating hours.

Also,  we will not be able to take in any additional animals at this time, so if you have an animal that you need to turn in, please see our list of other shelters under our Pet Resources tab (Surrendering an Animal) or you can call Highlands County Animal Control at 863-655-6475.

With the hottest days of summer upon us and temperatures right now climbing above 100 degrees across the U.S., we need your help to spread some lifesaving tips on caring for dogs. Sharing this vital information with everyone in your network could mean the difference between life and death for a dog during this sweltering summer heat:

• Keep dogs inside: Unlike humans, dogs can only sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Soaring temperatures can cause heat stress and be physically damaging or even fatal.

• Water and shade: If dogs must be left outside, they should be supplied with ample fresh water and shade, and the shifting sun needs to be taken into account. Where is the animal when you are at work? Even brief periods of direct exposure to the sun during a heat wave can have life-threatening consequences. Dogs should never be chained, as this can leave them no way to escape the direct sun at certain times of the day, no way to seek water should their water source be knocked over, and so on.

• Walk, don’t run: In very hot, humid weather, never exercise dogs by cycling while they try to keep up or by running them while you jog. Dogs will collapse before giving up, at which point it may be too late to save them. They can quickly become severely overheated, and an exercise session can turn into a medical emergency.

• Avoid parked cars: Never, ever leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather, even for short periods with the windows slightly open. Dogs trapped inside parked cars can succumb to heatstroke within minutes—even if the car isn’t parked in direct sunlight. If you see a dog trapped in a parked car, immediately take down the car’s color, model, make, and license-plate number, have the guardian paged inside nearby stores, and call local humane authorities or police. Do not leave the scene before the animal is helped!

• Hot pavement: Dogs can suffer painful burns on their footpads from heated asphalt, pavement, and sand. Test the heat of surfaces with your hand before walking a dog on them.

• Pickups: Never transport dogs in the bed of a pickup truck. This practice is dangerous—and illegal in many states and municipalities—because animals can catapult out of the truck bed on a sudden stop or choke if they jump out while they’re tied up. During hot weather, dogs’ feet and bellies can also get burned on the metal.

• Stay alert and save a life: Keep an eye on all outdoor dogs. Make sure that they have adequate water and shelter. If you see a dog in distress, contact humane authorities right away and give the dog immediate relief by providing water.
