CAN THE HUMANE SOCIETY SURVIVE?
To the Businesses, Organizations, and Residents of Highlands County:
We want to thank all of the contributors who have supported the Humane Society of Highlands County.
The Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill shelter which exists 100% on the donations of the people of this county. This 60-year old facility is now in serious financial trouble due to the decline of donations and the increase of the dog and cat population. Even though the Humane Society is the only one of its kind in this county, we find ourselves in the position of having to reduce services, or worse, close our doors. It comes down to whether or not the people of this county are willing to be a part of this solution. This is not a problem for just a few—it touches the lives in one way or another for all of us.
We are not asking anyone to divert their charitable donations away from the organizations they currently support, but look and consider ways in which a donation can also be given to the Humane Society. It should be noted that our Humane Society does not receive any funding from the Humane Society of the U.S nor do we receive any funding from the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Also, we do not receive any county, state or federal funding.
On January 30, 2011, the Humane Society will showcase the restaurants of this county with “A Taste of Highlands County.” Currently, we are in the process of asking the restaurants to be a part of this event. Those we have already contacted have enthusiastically agreed to participate. We are grateful, and this is exactly the willingness to be a part of the solution that we need.
If we cannot come together and save this shelter, we all lose a little bit of our humanity. We ask for your help. Please send your donations to the Humane Society of Highlands County, 7321 Haywood Taylor Blvd., Sebring, FL 33876. Our telephone number is (863) 655-1522. Credit cards are accepted. All donations are tax deductible.
In closing, thank you to all of those who have so willingly contributed even when it was difficult. And thank you to all of the businesses, organizations, and residents who will join us.
From the Board and Staff of the Humane Society of Highlands County
In order to help cut costs, our hours of operation will be Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11am – 4pm starting July 5, 2010. We will be closed to the public on the other days. Please come to the shelter during operating hours.
Also, we will not be able to take in any additional animals at this time, so if you have an animal that you need to turn in, please see our list of other shelters under our Pet Resources tab (Surrendering an Animal) or you can call Highlands County Animal Control at 863-655-6475.
